Sand-Free Towel vs Cotton Towel: Which Should You Take to the Beach?

We make sand-free towels, so we are not exactly neutral. But cotton still does some things better, and the right towel depends on how you use it. Here is an honest comparison.

What makes a towel "sand free"?

A classic cotton beach towel is made of thousands of tiny loops. They feel soft and soak up water, but they also trap sand, which is why you end up carrying half the beach home in your bag and your car.

A sand-free towel uses a smooth, tightly woven microfibre instead. There are no loops for sand to hide in, so dry sand slides off with a quick shake. Lost Sol towels are woven from 80% recycled PET and 20% polyamide.

Where cotton still wins

If you want a thick, cosy towel after a bath at home, cotton is hard to beat. It is also the better choice for a hotel pool, where someone else does the carrying and the washing. If you never take your towel anywhere, you do not need a sand-free one.

Where sand-free wins

The moment a towel has to travel, the balance tips. A sand-free towel takes up a fraction of the space in a suitcase, will not eat into your baggage allowance, and dries fast enough to use again the same afternoon. On the beach, it stays clean enough to lie on after a swim, and it does not follow you home in the footwell of the car.

Pat, do not rub: how to get the most from microfibre

A note on microfibre and microplastics

All synthetic fabrics can shed tiny fibres in the wash, and we would rather be upfront about that. Our towels are made from recycled plastic bottles and are GRS certified, which gives existing plastic a second life rather than making new. You can cut shedding further by washing cold, washing full loads, skipping fabric softener and using a fibre-catching wash bag or filter. Read more in our sustainability ethos.

How to get the most out of a sand-free towel

  • Shake it once it is dry. Wet sand clings to everything, but it falls away once the towel has dried in the sun.
  • Pat yourself dry rather than rubbing.
  • Cold machine wash at 30°C and wash it separately.
  • Skip the fabric softener, which coats the fibres and reduces absorbency, and do not bleach.
  • Hang it to dry. Do not tumble dry, iron or dry clean it, and keep it away from fire.

FAQ

Are sand-free towels completely sand proof?
No towel is completely sand proof. Dry sand slides off with a shake. Wet sand clings to any fabric, so let the towel dry in the sun for a few minutes first, then shake it and the sand comes away.

Do sand-free towels feel like normal towels?
Not quite. They are smoother and thinner than a fluffy cotton towel. Most people get used to the feel quickly, especially once they notice how little they weigh and how fast they dry.

Are they good for sea swimming and the gym?
Yes. Anywhere you carry a towel and need it to dry quickly, a microfibre towel is the easier choice.

How big are Lost Sol towels?
Every Lost Sol towel is 160 x 80cm, full beach size, and comes with a drawstring carry bag.
